iSMSS celebrates the vibrant diversity of our campuses by recognizing and supporting
important and collective efforts in creating welcoming, inclusive, safe, and respectful environments for sexual and gender minority students, faculty, staff, and allies.
Sexual and gender minorities represents an evolving constellation of identities including, but not limited to, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*,asexual, two-spirit, intersex, questioning, and queer.
I’m very proud of the University of Alberta's commitment to supporting sexual and gender minorities. Students, faculty, and staff have been working to build inclusive campuses at our university for more than 40 years. The Safe Spaces Initiative sustains this deep value for human equality and dignity, and helps to ensure that all members of our community are respected and supported.
- David Turpin, President and Vice-Chancellor
Diversity and inclusiveness strengthen and enrich our university and our community. The Safe Spaces Initiative advances those values by helping to ensure that everyone on each of our campuses feels safe, respected and valued regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
- Doug Stollery, Chancellor
Ensuring an excellent education for all University of Alberta students means that students study, learn, live and recreate in a caring and safe environment. With the U of A community, the Board of Governors is committed to making the U of A Campus a ‘safe space’ for queer staff and students.
