Our Impact

Founded in 2008, the Institute has had a profound and important impact on people:

  • Over 5100 contacts were made by Youth Intervention and Outreach Workers in 2012
  • Over 30 community development presentations were made to 500 attendees
  • More than 450 participants attended 45 youth group drop-in sessions
  • Nearly 100 youth campers and 40 youth leaders applied to Camp fYrefly– double our capacity
  • 86 youth received mental health support

Regarding inclusive policymaking and its implementation in practice, iSMSS researchers have made invited presentations to:

  • The Canadian Senate
  • Public Health Agency of Canada
  • UNESCO
  • World Health Organization
  • Pan American Health Organization
  • Canadian Teachers' Federation
  • Alberta Government

These consultations have led to the development of groundbreaking resources on homophobic bullying, gay-straight student alliances, sexual orientation and gender identity educational policies, and comprehensive sexual health guidelines and protocols, which have directly influenced government policy across Canada and internationally.
