The 5th annual Alberta Gender & Sexual Orientation Alliance (GSA) Conference will be located at Eastglen High School on Treaty 6 land in Amiskwaciy Wậskahikan, also known as Edmonton, on Saturday November 19th, 2016.

DETAILS: The conference aims to provide support for Alberta K-12 students and teachers in the formation and maintenance of GSAs/QSAs. There will be specialized workshops specific for students and teachers which will address a variety of topics including: how to start & strengthen a GSA, gender & sexuality for k-9 students, GSAs in rural communities, anti-oppression tips, newcomer supports, arts-based activities, and many more. There will also be a French workshop available each block.

Lunch will be provided, during which there will be a resource fair.

In mid-October, those who have tickets will receive an email regarding the workshop schedule and will then be able to register for workshops. Details will also be posted here and on the Alberta GSA Conference facebook event page.

PARTICIPANTS: Please be aware that this conference is only for students and teachers (or other school staff supporting a GSA). There will be a separate Community Workshop running at the same time which you can get free tickets for in early October. A link will be posted on the Alberta GSA Conference: Community Workshops facebook page and on this page.

ACCESSIBILITY: Washrooms throughout the school have been updated with no-door entrances, as well as wheelchair accessible stalls in each washroom. The elevator will be available for access to workshops on the 2nd floor. Ramps are built in next to small stair sets within the first floor. Washrooms will be all-gender and all washroom options have stalls.

TRAVEL: Each school or organization (outside of the Edmonton region) is eligible for a travel bursary of up to $500 to cover expenses to support students and staff to attend the 5th Annual Alberta GSA Conference. Eligible expenses include bus rental, gas receipts, and accommodations (if necessary). Travel bursaries will be awarded on a by request basis. We expect to be able to offer 10 bursaries for a total of $5,000. After the conference, your school must issue an invoice made payable to “The University of Alberta” for all travel expenses (up to $500) and you must include original receipts. To request a travel bursary please email Lauren Alston at AlbertaGSAnetwork@gmail.com.

If you have multiple schools in your city/town it is best to all travel together to save on costs. This will help us cover more travel costs for other schools!
